Steps To Working A Room Tip #3
Check Your Attitude and frame of mind before going to a networking event. It is key that you get mentally geared up and leave your problems, worries and challenges at home.
You will have a difficult time interacting with people and attracting the right people if you are known for talking about your family problems, business problems, etc at an event.
People enjoy talking about themselves, (in a positive way) Be sure to take an interest in them and ask questions to get started. Focused Networking’s theory is “More WE and LESS ME. You will find you will attract more people with this attitude.
People are flattered when you show an interest in them and their work/organization.
Make the first move to help make people feel comfortable. Take the initiative to approach others, particularly if you see someone standing on their own. Try to start the conversation with things you may have in common – i.e knowing the host, the purpose of the event, etc.
Remember – Listen 80% of the time and ask questions. Be in the “moment” when you are talking to people – don’t let your mind wander on to what you want to say next.
Think about taking notes, referring them to someone else you may know at the event.
